105° in Denton County — Here's Where to Go if Your AC Can't Keep Up

If your neighbor is elderly, renting a place with a struggling window unit, or working outside on a crew this week — this is the story to forward them.

The National Weather Service has been forecasting heat index values up to 105°F for Denton County, and the numbers have been following through. The humidity is the problem. Actual air temps have been hovering around 100°, but moisture reduces the body's ability to cool through sweat, pushing what it feels like well into the danger zone. That's not a weather-app abstraction. At those levels, the National Weather Service warns that heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely — and heatstroke becomes possible with prolonged exposure.

The Salvation Army activated its full heat relief network in response. Denton and Lewisville are both covered. The two Denton County stations — the Denton Corps Community Center and the Lewisville Corps Community Center — are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering air conditioning, water, and food. Those hours matter: if you're thinking about going, go before mid-afternoon, when the heat index peaks and the commute itself becomes a hazard.

The Salvation Army trips its heat relief protocol when forecasts call for temperatures at or above 100° for multiple days, or when the heat index is projected to top 105° for at least two consecutive days. That threshold has been met. This isn't a precautionary activation.

For anyone who can't reach a station, the organization is also deploying mobile feeding units — called canteens — to bring water and supplies directly to unsheltered residents. The Denton Community Shelter at 909 N. Loop 288 is operating as a daytime-only cooling center, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Each afternoon at 1 p.m., staff check the National Weather Service's HeatRisk data and decide whether to open overnight. The people who need this most are often the ones least likely to see it: older residents living alone and managing a high electric bill, renters in complexes with aging systems, landscapers and construction workers who can't take the afternoon off. Extreme heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States — more than tornadoes, hurricanes, and floods combined. Last year, Texas recorded more than 300 heat-related deaths. Many of those people had a roof over their heads. They just couldn't afford to keep it cool.
