A 24,000-Square-Foot Gathering Space Is Taking Shape on Cross Timbers Road

If you drive past 5201 Cross Timbers Road this week, you'll see the answer to a question Flower Mound has been quietly asking for years: where does a fast-growing town hold its dinners, its outreach programs, its community gatherings when there's nowhere affordable to do it?

St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church has been building a two-story parish life center since last July. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation puts the completion window at September 2026. That's roughly ten weeks out.

The numbers are worth sitting with. The new structure comes in at just over 24,000 square feet — nearly as large as the church itself. It adds six classrooms to a campus that currently has four, which Communications Director Sarah Fritcher described as causing a "never-ending shuffle" to fit the parish's weekly calendar. The building also includes a large assembly room built specifically for community meals, festivals, and speaker events, plus a dedicated adoration chapel with seating for about 30 people.

Then there's the parking. The project adds 120 spaces, increasing availability on the campus by roughly 40 percent. Anyone who has tried to get in and out of that stretch of Cross Timbers on a Sunday morning knows exactly why that line item matters.

The parish raised about $11 million to cover Phase I construction debt and fund this new building, a figure Fritcher described as a record for St. Philip. The Diocese of Fort Worth requires 65 percent of a project to be raised before breaking ground. The parish hit that mark and kept going, with an explicit goal of finishing debt-free.

Here's the part worth getting excited about. St. Philip's has said it wants this to be more than a Sunday building — a place for dinners, outreach, formation classes, and events, with the doors open to the wider community and not just the membership. That's a generous thing to build. Flower Mound is genuinely short on affordable, accessible places for groups to gather, and a church that opens its space to the whole town helps fill a gap a lot of us feel. If it grows into everything St. Philip's hopes for, the entire area is better for it — and that's something to look forward to.
