Argyle ISD School Year Starts Tuesday — Here's What the Phone Ban and Chromebook Update Mean for Your Family

If your Argyle ISD student is used to firing off texts at lunch, that changes Tuesday. School opens August 11, and two updated policies take effect on day one: a state-mandated ban on personal communication devices during the entire school day, and revised Chromebook guidelines the district published August 5.

Start with the phone rule, because it's the one that surprises parents more than students. Texas House Bill 1481 — passed by the Legislature — requires every public school district to prohibit student use of phones, smartwatches, wireless earbuds, and similar devices from the moment a student arrives on campus until departure. Argyle ISD's own back-to-school page spells out the scope: the ban covers classrooms, hallways, commons areas, and lunch. Powered off, out of sight, in the backpack. That's the standard.

Smartwatches get the same treatment. Per the district's legislative FAQ, any watch capable of sending or receiving texts or calls must be powered down. A basic analog watch is fine. A WiFi-enabled one is not.

If your student needs a device for a documented medical reason or has an IEP or 504 plan that requires one, exceptions exist — but families need that documentation in place before the first bell, not after a confiscation. Violations follow progressive discipline, and any confiscated device gets picked up by a parent, not the student.

On Chromebooks: Argyle ISD posted updated guidelines on August 5.
