Argyle Legacy High School Opens in 2027–28 With 9th and 10th Grade Only — No Varsity Football

UIL rules, a 9th-and-10th-grade launch, and what it means for student-athletes and families planning ahead.

If you have a seventh or eighth grader in Argyle ISD right now, the school they graduate from may not be the one you're picturing.

The current Argyle Middle School on Hwy. 377 will transition into the district's second high school — named Argyle Legacy High School — starting in the 2027–28 school year. For families watching enrollment pressure build, that's the headline. The details that shape a student-athlete's entire planning horizon, though, are in how the school opens.

Legacy starts with freshmen and sophomores only. Upper grade levels get added as those students move through. All four grades are projected to be in place by 2029–30. A student entering 9th grade at Legacy in fall 2027 will eventually share the building with seniors — but any junior or senior in 2027 stays at Argyle High.

Then there's football. In Texas, that matters.

The campus opens with 9th and 10th graders only, and varsity football competition begins the year after UIL realignment. Why the wait? A school that opens at the start of a two-year UIL alignment cycle would have to either field varsity football with only freshmen and sophomores for two full years or skip varsity altogether. Argyle ISD timed the launch specifically to sidestep that situation. Year one: no varsity football. Varsity begins after UIL realignment.

Every other sport is a different story. All other sports will offer sub-varsity and varsity opportunities based on participation numbers and UIL approval. Fine arts, band, and UIL academics students compete at the highest level available from day one. Band, theater, and academic competitors don't sit out year one. Just the football team.

That's a deliberate call, not an oversight. The district worked closely with UIL and with districts that have already completed similar transitions to plan a competitive launch. And Argyle has run this play before: when Argyle High School opened its doors, it launched with just 9th and 10th graders — exactly the same model Legacy is following now.

The Argyle ISD Board of Trustees approved the long-range facilities plan at a Special Meeting, locking in this framework. Superintendent Dr. Courtney Carpenter framed it directly: "As Argyle ISD continues to grow, we must balance meeting today's needs without overbuilding for the future."

One more number worth holding onto: enrollment growth is moving fast enough that Legacy is expected to hit its enrollment ceiling sometime during the 2030–31 school year.

The practical piece for your family right now — if you have a student in 7th or 8th grade, this timeline is yours. During the transition period, students at the 377 campus may be permitted to take certain classes at Argyle High School to keep access to courses and electives. The district has committed to sharing transition details well in advance. Watch for enrollment updates and feeder-pattern communications as the 2026–27 school year gets underway.
