Argyle Middle School's Honor Winds Win National Title. Their Symphonic Band Made the Top Half Too.

If your kid plays in the Argyle Middle School band, this is the week to let them take a bow.

The AMS Honor Winds earned the National Winner designation in the Mark of Excellence — and the Symphonic Winds advanced through the first round. The district announced the results on September 28.

The Mark of Excellence isn't a local or regional trophy. Run by the Foundation for Music Education, it pulls entries from across the United States and lets ensembles measure themselves against other outstanding groups nationwide. Getting recorded by your own director and then judged cold against hundreds of other programs is a different kind of pressure than a hometown festival.

Directors upload a recording of their ensemble, and adjudicators listen and provide detailed critique. A first-round panel selects the top 50% to advance; the second-round panel then cuts that group in half, leaving the top 25% as National Winners. A National Winner label means surviving two rounds of external review.

The students tackled music typically performed by high school, collegiate, and even professional ensembles. That says something about what the directors asked of them.

No public meeting, no agenda item, no action required. This one's just good news — the kind that shows up on a college résumé and sticks around long after the school year ends.
