If your family has been meaning to try camping without the full commitment of hauling gear and planning meals, this is the weekend. The Town of Flower Mound's Family Campout runs from Saturday, September 19 at 3 p.m. through Sunday, September 20 at 8 a.m. at the Twin Coves Overlook Pavilion — that's the one right on the Grapevine Lake side of the park.

The short version: you pitch a tent at the Overlook Pavilion, and the town provides catered meals. You show up, you eat, you sleep outside. Low bar for a first camping experience with kids.

Want a cabin or RV hookup instead of a tent? Those upgrades cost extra and go through Twin Coves Park directly — not through the general event registration — and Friday, September 11 is the last day to book them. The cabin option means climate control and no sleeping bag, but that deadline is three days out. General event registration stays open a day longer, through Saturday, September 12.

There's also a tent decorating contest. Bring your tent decorations, sleeping bags, bug spray, and flashlights; the most creative fall-themed tent wins a prize. A structured competition gives kids something to prep for in the days before, which is either a gift or a challenge depending on how seriously your household takes crafts.

The town's Parks and Recreation office can confirm the current pricing and what cabin or RV spots remain — call them directly before assuming anything is still open.

Twin Coves sits on the north shore of Grapevine Lake. If you've never been out there after dark, the lake view from the overlook area is worth the trip on its own. Deer wander through. Genuinely quiet.
