David Wylie Won the Republican Primary — Now November Will Decide Who Shapes Growth Across Southwest Denton County

If you drive FM 2499 during the evening commute, the next Denton County Commissioner for Precinct 4 will have a direct hand in whether that gets better or worse. The primary settled who the Republican nominee is. November 3 settles everything else.

David Wylie narrowly secured the Republican nomination for Denton County Commissioner Precinct 4, defeating Valerie Roehrs by just 31 votes in the May 26 runoff. Thirty-one votes. Out of nearly 18,000 cast. In complete but unofficial results, Wylie earned 8,903 votes — 50.09% — compared to Roehrs' 8,872. That's about as close as county politics gets.

Wylie will face Democrat Stephanie Draper in the November election. The winner will be sworn in for a four-year term in January 2027. Draper ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.

This seat shapes daily life in Flower Mound whether residents follow county politics or not. Precinct 4 covers the southwest portion of Denton County — from Argyle to Northlake, Ponder, Justin, and Flower Mound, including parts of Denton. The commissioners court functions as the county's primary legislative and policy-making body — most boards also control county land usage, oversee environmental issues, and possess executive powers, including the authority to appoint or remove departmental heads. In practice, that means zoning, roads, and development approvals in unincorporated areas all flow through this office. Those decisions ripple outward to property values, traffic, and the character of every community that borders the city limits.

Wylie, of Argyle, has been active in Republican Party politics for decades. His public service background includes serving as Republican Precinct Chair and Election Judge since 1990, on the State Republican Executive Committee from 2020 to 2025, and as President of the Argyle Municipal Development District since 2023. He framed growth as the central concern: future development, he argued, will be the responsibility of the county since cities can no longer annex to provide infrastructure — and ensuring that growth is done right is the only way to protect quality of life.

Going into the runoff, Wylie drew endorsements from Republican officials including Denton County Judge Andy Eads. Roehrs outspent him by a wide margin. Roehrs spent $616,633 — the majority self-funded — while Wylie spent about $117,315, according to campaign finance reports. He won anyway.

Precinct 4 leans heavily Republican. Dianne Edmondson won the seat in 2018 and again in 2022 without serious general-election competition. But a 31-vote primary margin suggests the field is less settled than the party registration numbers imply. Both candidates will make their case on roads, infrastructure, and the pace of growth. For anyone sitting in traffic on FM 2499 at 5 p.m., that argument lands close to home.
