Davis High School Has a Mascot — and Tonight, NISD Releases the Proposed Boundary Maps

If your student is somewhere in Northwest ISD's middle or high school pipeline, two things happened in the last 72 hours worth your attention.

Start with the fun one. Northwest ISD announced the mascot for Davis High School during a topping-out ceremony. Students had two choices — Aviators or Diamondbacks — and it wasn't close. Students chose the Diamondbacks by a wide margin in a vote that drew more than 1,000 middle school students back in May. The Diamondbacks name joins the previously announced school colors of maroon, black and white to round out the Davis High School branding.

Principal Dr. Ron Myers said the mascot "commands respect, is uniquely Texan and makes its presence known when approached," adding that "the clear choice from our students shows the unified voice and identity they want to build together."

Now the part that actually changes your week.

A high school rezoning process is running this semester to draw attendance boundaries for Davis High School. The district's September 28 school board meeting serves as the trigger point — the proposed boundary maps are scheduled to drop the same day, which means they go public tonight. The exact boundaries will be finalized during a rezoning process next winter, so what drops tonight is a proposal, not a done deal. Community input comes before the board votes.

Why does this reach into Flower Mound? Davis High sits in what is currently the Byron Nelson attendance zone, and the rezoning will redistribute students across all four high schools — not just the new one. The district's goal is to draw a boundary for Davis High School and best balance enrollment across the district for the 2027-2028 school year. Add a fourth school, and the other three shift too.

Davis High will open in 2027 with freshmen and sophomores, adding a junior class in 2028-2029 and a senior class in 2029-2030. It was approved in the 2023 bond election. The maps released tonight will show the full picture of which middle schools feed into the new campus.

The Transportation, Automation & Logistics Academy will open alongside the new school. The district is still awaiting federal approval for a proposed JROTC program at the campus.

What to do right now: Check nisdtx.org tonight or tomorrow morning for the proposed boundary maps. If your student is currently in middle school or the lower grades of high school, the assigned campus for 2027-28 could change. The district will hold community input meetings before the board finalizes anything.
