Denton County Bought a Fire Station — and Ponder Is Just the Start

If you live inside Flower Mound, Lewisville, or the city of Denton, you already have paid firefighters on shift. If you live just outside those lines — in the unincorporated stretches of southern Denton County — you've been depending on volunteers to answer the call. That was just the deal.

Until now.

Denton County commissioners approved the $2.1 million purchase of the Ponder Volunteer Fire Station at a Sept. 9 meeting as part of an effort to improve emergency services to unincorporated areas. That's not a real estate transaction. Proceeds from the purchase are being used to fund 24-hour staffing for the next three years — the first time 24/7 service has ever been available to those residents.

First time. Ever.

Denton County will lease the fire station back to the Ponder Fire Department for $1 a year and provide an ambulance to serve the town's emergency response zone. The volunteers don't disappear — they get backup, equipment, and a building their county now owns. Whether that partnership stays smooth over three years is a fair question nobody has answered yet.

This move is part of something larger. It's the next phase in the Fire and EMS Master Plan, adopted by Denton County Commissioners Court in June 2024. The three-tier plan was developed to manage fire and EMS services within the Denton County unincorporated area, which makes up about half of the county. Half the county. That's a lot of roads without a city limit sign.

The acquisition aims to provide adequate emergency responses as the county's population grows by over 90 people each day. Currently, the county has contracts with 19 departments to provide services in unincorporated areas. Nineteen separate agreements, most of them with volunteer departments that are stretched thin. The county is betting that owning infrastructure — not just contracting for it — is how you actually guarantee a response time.

"With the rapid growth in Denton County, Commissioners Court saw the need to create a countywide fire protection plan, and the Ponder Fire Station is a foundational element of the Fire and EMS Master Plan," said Precinct 4 Commissioner Dianne Edmondson.

Precinct 1 Commissioner Ryan Williams pointed to new housing developments coming specifically to Precinct 1 as a reason to get infrastructure in place now. That's worth watching. Where development is headed, the county says fire coverage needs to be ahead of it. Not reacting to it.

The plan is described as the only one of its kind in Texas. That's either genuinely innovative or a sign that every other Texas county is still working it out. Probably both.

For Flower Mound residents specifically: if your address puts you inside town limits, none of this changes your coverage. But if you have family or property in the county's unincorporated pockets — or if you've watched the rural areas north and west of here grow faster than their services — this is the county doing something concrete about it. The next things to watch: which areas get the next station, whether the 19 contracted departments see this as a model or a threat, and what happens to the staffing commitment when the three-year funding window closes in 2028.
