Denton County Commissioners Court Meets Today — and Again Next Tuesday

Two chances this month to weigh in on the decisions that shape your property tax bill and the roads in your neighborhood.

Denton County Commissioners Court meets this morning — Tuesday, August 18 — at 9 a.m. at the Administrative Courthouse. A second meeting follows next Tuesday, August 25, also at 9 a.m. at the same location.

Commissioners Court is the general governing body of Denton County, made up of a County Judge — elected countywide and presiding over the full Court — and four County Commissioners, with each commissioner representing one of the county's four geographic precincts and elected by voters in that precinct. Most residents think of city council as the meeting that matters. The county runs a separate lane entirely. Each commissioner is responsible for construction and maintenance of county roads within their precinct — so the road work near your neighborhood may trace back to this room, not Town Hall.

Budget and tax-rate decisions made by Commissioners Court affect the county portion of your property-tax bill. Your appraised property value also plays a major role in determining the final bill.

Texas Open Meetings Law requires anyone who wants to give oral or written testimony to fill out and submit a Public Comment Form ahead of the meeting. That's the step most residents skip. Completed forms and any documentation may be submitted online or in person on the day of Commissioners Court. Both work.
