Denton County Commits $40 Million to Help Residents Buy Homes
The money is approved. Exactly who can apply — and how — still has to be worked out.

If you've been watching home prices climb while your savings can't quite catch up, Denton County just put $40 million on the table for you. The Commissioners Court approved a new homeownership assistance program at a recent meeting — aimed at people who want to buy but keep getting stuck on the down payment or the gap between what a conventional lender wants and what they actually have.
That's the commitment. What isn't settled yet: who qualifies, how much help any one applicant can receive, what the income limits look like, and when applications open. Those details will come out through the county's website and at a future Commissioners Court session.
What the vote did lock in is the funding. Forty million dollars is real money. County-level homeownership programs are typically structured as down-payment or closing-cost assistance rather than rental subsidies or new construction funding. The county hasn't specified the form yet, but structure matters: a program that's hard to apply for, or that sets eligibility bars too tight, can sit largely unused, while one that's well-structured and actively promoted can meaningfully move people from renting to owning.
For Flower Mound and south Denton County residents, the broader housing picture is part of the backdrop. Development pressure across Denton County has pushed demand and prices in every direction. A county-run buying-assistance program would be a new tool for people who are already here and want to stay, but can't quite get across the finish line.
No launch date has been set. Check dentoncounty.gov and watch future Commissioners Court agendas — that's where eligibility criteria, income caps, and the application timeline will first appear. Court meetings are held at 9 a.m. every Tuesday at 1 Courthouse Drive, Suite 3100, in Denton, and agendas post on the county's site before each session.
