Denton County's Fire System Just Won a State Award — and Flower Mound's Department Is Part of It

When you call 911 from a Flower Mound address, the right answer isn't always the truck from the closest Flower Mound station. Sometimes a unit from a neighboring jurisdiction is physically nearer. For years across Denton County, that distinction created real gaps — help waiting while a closer truck sat idle across an invisible line.

That's the problem the county set out to fix. This week, the Texas Association of Counties agreed they've made serious progress. Denton County took home a Best Practices Award from the Texas Association of Counties for building its Countywide Fire Response System.

The program is called the Denton County Emergency Response Area. It's a hybrid model: the county handles planning, infrastructure, and system coordination, while local fire departments run the operational response. Rather than leaving each jurisdiction to operate in isolation, the system draws coordinated response zones, routes calls to whichever unit can arrive fastest, and brings infrastructure planning up to a regional scale. Flower Mound's fire department works inside that structure.

Departments across the county have signed contracts with the county to handle response across unincorporated areas. For smaller departments, the arrangement opens access to equipment and training resources they couldn't sustain alone. The county earmarked American Rescue Plan Act funds to purchase ambulances and provided a state-of-the-art ambulance to the City of Oak Point.

The motivation behind the whole effort has a human face. Commissioner Dianne Edmondson first pushed for the unified system, working to build a structure where dispatch goes to whoever can get there first, regardless of which agency owns the truck.

Growth made the urgency real. Denton County is one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States, and building a system that scales with that growth is what the state recognized.
