Denton County's Property Tax Rate Just Hit Its Lowest Point Since 1986

Commissioners approved 18.34¢ per $100 — and a $495 million budget that still funds a new fire station and courthouse work.

Your county tax bill is going down. Denton County Commissioners Court approved the FY 2026–2027 budget this week, setting the property tax rate at 18.3394¢ per $100 of valuation — the lowest it has been in 40 years.

The rate falls from 18.5938¢ to 18.3394¢ per $100. On paper that sounds small. For a home valued at $400,000, the county portion of the tax bill drops by about $10. Not a windfall. But movement in a direction homeowners rarely see.

The lower rate does not mean a leaner budget. Commissioners Court approved $495,100,302 in total spending on Tuesday. Population growth keeps generating revenue through car registrations, fines, and intergovernmental transfers even as the rate itself ticks down.

The budget funds three capital projects: building the Tabor Ranch Fire Station, ongoing work to restore the Courthouse-on-the-Square, and keeping county facilities in good repair through preventative maintenance.

Worth sizing correctly: this is the county rate only. Flower Mound residents also pay the town's separate rate, plus whatever Lewisville ISD or their applicable school district sets. Commissioners have noted that the county's share of a typical overall tax bill runs roughly 10 percent of the total. One slice — but a real one.

The new rate takes effect with the budget on October 1, 2026. To see how your full bill breaks down across county, city, and school layers, the Denton County Tax Assessor's office can pull that detail for your specific parcel.
