Dumpling Queen Is Open — and Flower Mound Has Never Had Anything Quite Like It

They Planned a Quiet Opening. It Did Not Go Quietly.

Your Memorial Day weekend plans probably looked normal. The team behind Dumpling Queen had the same idea — holiday weekend, people out of town, a chance to work out the kitchen kinks before real crowds showed up. That is not what happened. They did a soft opening on Memorial Day and were hit by a surprise rush of customers, both for takeout and dining in. "With the holiday, we thought we could open quietly, but it was the opposite," says John Watson, husband of head chef Lulu Du. That accidental stress test may have been the best thing that could have happened to them.

Dumpling Queen is now open at 1050 Flower Mound Rd., Suite 110, in the former Here Asian Cuisine space, serving steamed dumplings, hand-pulled noodles, and other family recipes from Sichuan, China. The grand opening hadn't been formally announced as of early June. Walk in now, and you're still getting in ahead of the crowd.

Who Is Actually Behind This Place

The ownership lineup is worth paying attention to, because it's not the usual suburban restaurant story.

Dumpling Queen is the brainchild of chef Lulu Du, a native of China who moved to the U.S. in 2021 and has worked at well-regarded restaurants in China and the U.S., including the acclaimed North Dallas restaurant Tian Tian, which closed in 2025. That last credit matters in DFW food circles. Tian Tian had a serious reputation before it shuttered.

Watson says a few things worked in the team's favor when competing for the lease: "our partners' expertise and my wife's experience. She lived in China for many years and worked at a 7-star restaurant, where she learned to master noodles and handmade dumplings."

She's joined by a team that includes her husband John Watson and daughter Ruby Sun; restaurateur Yen "Louie" Jing, who operates Ocean Buffet and Hokkaido Ramen Sushi; and chef Andy Feng, who previously owned multiple locations of Lovers Egg Roll. Chef Lulu and Chef Andy together bring over 70 years of combined culinary experience. Andy brings more than 30 years of culinary experience specifically in Dallas.

They also had to fight for the space. Watson says the team felt grateful to land the location "right in the heart of Flower Mound" — and that it "got a lot of interest including more than one national chain." The family team won it anyway.

What Changed Inside

The space isn't just repainted. The most notable renovation was transforming the former sushi bar into a dumpling production area, so customers can watch while dumplings are being made — "like a little show," Watson says. A deliberate choice, and a smart one. Putting the kitchen on display signals confidence in what's coming out of it. You don't do that if you're not sure.

The team also added a new enclosed side patio, similar in style to what you find at the Gloria's chain — extra seating, a big screen, a bar-adjacent feel. The liquor license is still pending, so for now the drink options are beer, mimosas, and sake. Cocktails may come later.

The Menu: Two Chefs, Two Mandates

The menu is honest about what it's doing. It combines Chinese-American favorites such as orange chicken and Mongolian beef with Chinese handmade dumplings and buns — including xiao long bao (soup dumplings) and authentic Chinese potstickers. Chef Andy owns the American-Chinese side. Chef Lulu owns the dumplings.

Dumplings come in about a dozen varieties: shrimp & pork chive, veggie with tofu & mushroom, pork with crab, and a four-color rainbow dumpling sampler with two each of beef, chicken, seafood, and veggie.

Then there are the harder-to-find items. The restaurant proudly introduces thumb-sized pan-fried buns and juicy sheng jian bao — specialties that are still rare in the Dallas Chinese food scene. The potsticker (Guo Tie) traces its origins to Qingdao, Shandong, China, as part of the Lu Cuisine tradition. And for anyone who needs a dessert argument: there's a chocolate lava bao filled with chocolate.

The restaurant uses only fresh, high-quality ingredients and says it uses no additives and no MSG, "allowing every bite to reflect the pure, original flavors."

Ruby Sun puts it simply: "My mother has over 40 years of experience making Chinese dumplings and traditional pastries." "Sharing that part of our family and culture with the Flower Mound community means a lot to us."

The Thing Worth Watching

Doing two things well in one kitchen is genuinely hard. The dual identity — authentic Sichuan dumplings alongside orange chicken and cashew chicken — could confuse diners who want one thing or the other. That tension is real. Worth watching as the restaurant finds its footing.

The soft opening reviews that have come in so far don't suggest a kitchen in trouble. Early diners on the restaurant's own site call out the soup dumplings and hand-pulled noodles as standouts, and the ownership presence on the floor has been noticed. When John Watson and Louie Jing are working the room themselves, that's not a restaurant coasting.

The grand opening is still ahead. Go before the line forms.
