Flower Mound's Police Station Is Moving — and the Old Building's Future Is Still an Open Question

Your commute past Kirkpatrick Lane may look different in a few years. So might the town's tax rolls, depending on what happens to the building the police leave behind.

In 1997, Town Council bought a shuttered Food Lion at 4150 Kirkpatrick Ln., renovated it, and opened it as a police station by July 2000. That's not a joke. For a town that looked a lot different then, it worked. For the Flower Mound that exists now, the question is whether it still does.

Town leadership says no. Discussions about a new police station began several years ago, and staff started searching for potential sites that offered a central location for quick response times and enough acreage for an expanded footprint. After quietly evaluating eight candidate properties, Town Council authorized the purchase of 2311 Aberdeen Dr. in September 2025 as a future site for a new police headquarters and Fire Station #3, and the town closed on that property in February 2026.

The land is bought. The move is far from done.

In November 2025, the town entered into a professional services agreement with BRW Architects for a feasibility study — analyzing both a renovation of the existing police and courts facility for a different use, and the construction of a new police station at the Aberdeen location. That study is expected to be completed by early summer 2026. Results could land on council's desk any week now.

The current building is genuinely constrained. The 4.8-acre Kirkpatrick site holds a 45,600-square-foot building — the police department takes up 35,600 square feet of it, and Municipal Court occupies roughly 10,000 square feet. Police and court share 232 parking spaces, many of them regularly occupied by court visitors, jurors, and defendants. Officers often park in public areas because secure parking is so limited — and more than double the existing spaces are needed to safely accommodate staff vehicles, patrol units, specialized vehicles, and visitors. The town has patched this with a string of renovations over the years. There's a limit to how much you can do with a repurposed supermarket.

The fire station piece is moving faster. Design on Fire Station #3 started in spring 2026. Construction could start in 2027, at an estimated cost of approximately $12 million, funded with certificates of obligation. The police headquarters has a harder road. Once a cost estimate is identified, the next step is budget discussions with Town Council — and the cost and funding source need to be determined before any design or construction can begin. That's code for: expect a bond conversation.

Then there's the Kirkpatrick building itself, and this is the part that deserves more attention than it gets. The feasibility study's scope explicitly includes analyzing the existing police and courts facility for a different use. That building sits on a 4.8-acre site near the town's older commercial core — a chunk of land and square footage that could become a community asset, generate tax revenue through a sale, or quietly become an expensive liability if the reuse question gets deferred. Watch it closely.

The study results this summer are the first real checkpoint. If BRW's numbers pencil out, council moves to site planning and cost estimates. If the price tag for the new headquarters triggers sticker shock, the whole timeline shifts. Staff evaluated eight potential sites before selecting the Aberdeen property, so there's no obvious plan B waiting. Aberdeen is the bet. The feasibility study will tell residents how much it costs to collect.
