FMPD's Motorcycle Unit Is Back — After 19 Years Off the Street

If you drive anything over the posted limit on FM 2499 or through the neighborhoods off Long Prairie, start checking your mirrors more carefully. The Flower Mound Police Department's Motorcycle Unit is back on patrol.

The department first launched a Motorcycle Unit in 1996. When the motorcycles aged out of service, they weren't replaced, and by 2007 the unit had been phased out entirely. Nearly two decades of patrol cars only. Officers have now completed the required training, and the unit is operational again — no new budget line, no new hires. Existing officers, existing resources.

That last part matters. Restoring a specialized unit without added funding means FMPD expanded its traffic enforcement capability without asking taxpayers for anything extra. A motorcycle covers ground a squad car simply can't. Quicker through a school-zone backup. More visible in a line of afternoon traffic on Flower Mound Road. Easier to tuck into a neighborhood cut-through where speeders know a cruiser won't follow.

The unit handles traffic enforcement and neighborhood patrols — the exact work that generates the most calls from people who just want their street to feel safer on a Tuesday afternoon.
