Four Dates This August and September Will Set Your Property Tax Bill

Tonight is the first official move of Flower Mound's budget season, and if you own property here, the next seven weeks will determine what you pay.

Tonight — Monday, Aug. 3 — town council votes to schedule a public hearing for the Crime District and Fire District. Procedural, yes. But it opens the calendar. Three more sessions follow in quick order:

• Aug. 13: Town Council Budget Work Session.
• Aug. 17: Town Council votes to consider a maximum tax rate and to schedule the public hearing for Sept. 14.
• Sept. 14: Public hearing on the tax rate — and the council votes to adopt the final budget.

All council meetings start at 6 p.m. at Flower Mound Town Hall, 2121 Cross Timbers Rd.

The FY 2026–27 tax rate comes out of this process. The draft budget will be published once finalized and posted to the town's website. Whatever the council adopts goes into effect Oct. 1, 2026.

One thing worth understanding before you walk in: the town's slice is not the whole bill. If you live in Denton County and Lewisville ISD, your total property tax bill combines rates from the town, the county, the school district, and other taxing entities — and Flower Mound receives only a small portion of that. Schools, county, and other districts account for the rest.

The town has been open about the fiscal pressure shaping this year's discussions. In 2019, the Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 2, capping how cities can fund local services — a voter referendum is required before any municipality can grow its property tax revenue beyond 3.5% in a single year, no matter how much service costs have climbed. Sales tax revenue has also slowed. One option under evaluation: a Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election, or VATRE, which would let residents decide whether the town may collect revenue above state-imposed limits. No decisions have been made on a future VATRE.
