LISD's New Bell Schedule Starts August 12 — High Schoolers Sleep In, Middle Schoolers Don't

The district swapped start times for middle and high school this year, and your morning routine needs to reflect it before day one.

If you have a middle or high schooler in Lewisville ISD, the bell schedule you've been running on is no longer accurate. August 12 is 27 days out. Time to reset.

The LISD Board of Trustees voted in January to swap start times between middle and high school campuses. High schools now start at 8:50 a.m. and dismiss at 4:15 p.m. Middle schools now start at 8:15 a.m. and dismiss at 3:40 p.m. That's a reversal from last year, when high school started before middle school.

Every campus also picks up 10 extra minutes of instructional time. The student day extends from 435 minutes to 445 minutes, bringing LISD closer in line with neighboring districts.

Why the flip? Board members pointed to unsupervised middle schoolers arriving well before the old 8:55 a.m. start. Board Vice President Katherine Sells noted during the January work session that she had seen a child dropped off at 7:20 a.m. for a nearly 9 a.m. bell. Supporters also cited high schoolers who work part-time and benefit from an afternoon that opens up sooner. Two trustees voted no, raising concerns from families about after-school jobs and activities like marching band that depend on predictable end times.

Elementary schedules shift slightly: 7:40 a.m. to 3:05 p.m., five minutes earlier on each end than last year.

The practical math matters here. One kid in middle, one in high school means two different schedules running in a different order than last year. Carpool timing, bus pickups, and after-school handoffs all need a fresh look before the 12th. Confirm your campus's exact times and bus assignments at lisd.net.
