LISD's School Day Gets 10 Minutes Longer Starting Wednesday — and High School and Middle School Flip Their Start Times

School opens Wednesday, and the schedule your family ran on last year no longer applies.

At the January 12 board meeting, Lewisville ISD's Board of Trustees approved two changes taking effect with the 2026–27 school year: high school and middle school will now open in the opposite order from before, and every grade level will spend an additional 10 minutes in school each day. That year starts in two days.

Here's the part that changes your morning: in 2025–26, high school started before middle school. For 2026–27, that order flips — middle school now starts first. The new times, pulled directly from the district's official academic calendar PDF:

High school: 8:50 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. (early release at 1 p.m.) Middle school: 8:15 a.m. – 3:40 p.m. (early release at 12:20 p.m.) Elementary: 7:40 a.m. – 3:05 p.m.

For comparison, middle school previously ran from 8:55 a.m. to 4:10 p.m., and high school ran from 8:20 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. High schoolers now start 30 minutes later and get out 40 minutes later. Middle schoolers start 40 minutes earlier and get out 30 minutes earlier. If you have one kid at each level — and plenty of Flower Mound families do — your morning and afternoon logistics just split further apart.

Every grade level picks up those same 10 extra minutes. The board moved the student instructional day from 435 minutes to 445 minutes, bringing it more in line with neighboring districts.

The board's stated reason for the flip: a parent survey supported giving high schools the later start time. Research on adolescent sleep has long backed later high school starts, and LISD's move puts it in step with that direction.

What you need to do before Wednesday: Pull up the official bell schedule at lisd.net and confirm your campus's exact times. If you're in a carpool, text the group tonight. If your child rides a bus, contact the LISD transportation office to confirm pickup windows — route times shift when bell times shift. Before- and after-school care pickups may also need updating with your provider.
