LISD's Second Early Childhood Center Is Open — Named for a Lewisville Trailblazer

If you have a pre-K-age kid and you're zoned to Lewisville High School, a second option just opened its doors.

Lewisville ISD cut the ribbon on the Vernell Gregg Early Childhood Center on October 5. The campus sits in the former Mill Street Elementary building at 601 S. Mill St. in Lewisville, repurposed this year.

The center is named for someone who earned it. Vernell Gregg was the district's first-ever Black school board member. She spent 39 years teaching, 25 of them in Lewisville ISD, then served on the board and as board president.

The building's history is worth a sentence. Mill Street had posted failing Texas Education Agency accountability ratings, which required the district to act. LISD's response was to stop operating it as a neighborhood elementary and convert it into a dedicated pre-K campus serving the Lewisville High School zone. The board formally approved the renaming at its June 8 meeting.

Before this year, Lillie J. Jackson Early Childhood Center was the only campus of its kind in the district. LISD now lists two: Lillie J. Jackson and Vernell Gregg. For families in the northern part of the district, Gregg ECC is the closer option.

Families whose children were previously enrolled at Mill Street were reassigned to other campuses when the conversion happened. If your child is approaching pre-K age and you want to confirm whether Gregg ECC serves your address, start at lisd.net or call the campus directly.
