Northwest High Opens CTE Academies for a Walk-Through Wednesday, Oct. 21

If your high schooler still shrugs when you ask what comes after graduation, Wednesday, Oct. 21 is a low-pressure 90 minutes that might change that.

Northwest High School hosts its CTE Academy Night from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21. No RSVP. No commitment. Just walk in.

What you'll actually find there: students and families can learn about the programs, tour the facilities, and talk with teachers and current students. The Construction Academy is a good example of the range — it gives students the ability to learn trade skills and enter the workforce right after graduation, or gain more advanced construction knowledge for career advancement. Cosmetology runs deeper than most families expect — students take cosmetology courses at the academy and work toward professional credentials while still in high school.

The Cosmetology Academy draws students from across the district, not just Northwest. During junior and senior year, students take cosmetology courses at the academy located at Northwest High School, while finishing academic courses at their home campus — Byron Nelson, Eaton, or Northwest. So if you're an Eaton or Byron Nelson family, Wednesday night, Oct. 21 is still for you.

CTE doesn't mean skipping college. It can run alongside a college-prep track, shorten the path to a credential, or give a student a marketable skill before they ever set foot on a campus. Walking through in person — seeing the equipment, meeting the instructors — is the fastest way to know if any of it fits.

If Wednesday, Oct. 21 doesn't work, or you want a wider picture: mark Wednesday, Oct. 29 on your calendar — Northwest High School is putting on the Northwest ISD College & Career Fair that evening from 6 to 8 p.m., with colleges and universities from across Texas represented.
