Peters Colony Memorial Park Opens Wednesday — Here's What to Expect at the 6 p.m. Ribbon Cutting

That land west of the library finally has a name, a veterans plaza, and a date: this Thursday.

If you've driven down Peters Colony Road and watched that stretch of trees west of the library slowly turn into something, Wednesday is the payoff. Peters Colony Memorial Park holds its ribbon cutting Thursday, June 11, at 6 p.m. — right there at 3201 Peters Colony Rd., steps from a building most of us already have bookmarked.

The park is 3.3 acres, which sounds modest until you actually walk a 3.3-acre heavily treed space in June. It includes a pavilion, native landscaping, nature-inspired playground equipment, an educational water feature, and trails that connect directly into the library campus. That last part matters: park once, do both.

The headliner Thursday isn't the playground. It's the dedication of the Chief Warrant Officer Douglas A. Brown Veterans Plaza — named for a Flower Mound centenarian who enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, flew B-25s and A-26s, then rejoined service with the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps in 1948, posted to Italy, Germany, and France before retiring from the Army in 1966. A life's worth of service getting a permanent address in town. Not a plaque tucked into a corner. An actual plaza.

The park also includes legacy monuments — six free-standing structures with 204 panels where Flower Mound residents can be posthumously honored, with space for names, ranks, military and first-responder emblems, and service dates. The town is still accepting applications. If you've been looking for a way to honor someone, that's worth a look at flowermound.gov/PCMP.

This project was a long time coming. Design work began in 2020. Construction started in October 2024, funded largely through tax increment reinvestment zone money and a $750,000 grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. It ran longer than originally projected — the town first penciled in fall 2025, then April 2026, and here we are in June. But the bones look right: trees preserved, pathways to the library, a trail connection to the Texas Yellow Star Trail.

The real test starts Thursday night and runs every weekend after that. A park stays a park when the city keeps the grass cut, the bathrooms clean, and the water feature actually running. This one has the design. Now it has to earn the foot traffic.
