If you walk, run, or push a stroller along the Purple Cone Flower Trail, your usual route goes away this week for roughly four weeks.

The Town posted the notice on its homepage. The closure begins the week of June 8 and the work is expected to finish in about four weeks. The stated reason is improvements. What exactly is being fixed, and which specific segment is blocked off — the Town hasn't said.

That's the problem. The trail runs between Lawson Park and Wilkerson Park, tracing a creek through one of the better shaded corridors in central Flower Mound. Paved, flat, accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, reliably busy with walkers, runners, and cyclists. A lot of people count on it for a 30-to-45-minute outing. No detour has been published. No alternative segment has been flagged. Regular users are left to sort it out themselves.

Alternatives do exist. The broader network covers more than 66 miles of paved paths, and the Bluebonnet, Indian Blanket, and Pink Evening Primrose corridors are all named routes with their own trailheads across town. The Northshore Trail near Grapevine Lake is the obvious swap for anyone willing to drive a few minutes — though it's unpaved, hillier, and better suited to trail runners than casual walkers. Different animal entirely.

Park Superintendent Clayton Litton is the Parks Department contact for trail questions: 972.874.7275. If you need to know whether your entry point at Lawson or Wilkerson is still open, that's your call to make.

The Town will presumably post an update when the work wraps. Bookmark flowermound.gov/805/All-Trails and check back. A proper detour notice mid-closure would be a welcome change from the current approach, which leaves regular users guessing from the start.
