The Argyle ISD Tax Vote That Already Happened — and What It Means Now

The 2024 school funding referendum failed at the ballot box. Here's where the district stands heading into 2026.

Editor's note: A story submitted to FloMoBee described an Argyle ISD voter-approval tax rate election with early voting running through Nov. 1 and Election Day on Nov. 5. After verifying every claim against primary sources, we found those dates belong to the 2024 Argyle ISD VATRE — not a 2026 measure. Texas's 2026 general election falls on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, and no Argyle ISD VATRE appears on that ballot based on available district and county records. Here is what the record actually shows.

If you live in the Argyle ISD attendance zone, you will not be voting on a school tax rate increase on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026. That election already happened — on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024 — and it failed.

With all 11 precincts reporting, unofficial results showed 43% in favor and 57% against. The district returned to its existing budget.

What Argyle ISD had asked for was a 7.7-cent increase to its Maintenance and Operations tax rate. If approved, the measure would have kept roughly $2.5 million in the district to fund teacher and staff pay raises, add campus support positions, and address growing class sizes. For a homeowner carrying $300,000 in taxable value, the cost would have come to about $231 a year — $77 per $100,000 of taxable home value.

That money would have covered day-to-day operating costs, not buildings or equipment. Bond funds from the Interest and Sinking side of the budget cannot be used for operational expenses like teacher raises, rising utilities, or climbing insurance premiums. A district can hold bond money and still be short on M&O revenue to give teachers a raise. The two pools don't mix.

The last time Argyle ISD had raised its M&O rate before the 2024 vote was in 2012, when voters approved a 10-cent tax ratification election. In the years between, the rate had been flat or drifting down. In the 2023-24 school year alone, the district cut its M&O rate by $0.1854, which worked out to $1,090.42 less in school taxes for the average homeowner. Argyle ISD pointed to that prior decrease when making the case for the 2024 ask — arguing residents were still paying less than they had been, even with the proposed increase on top.

Homeowners 65 and older with a homestead tax ceiling would have seen no change to their taxes regardless of the outcome.

With the VATRE defeated, the 2% midpoint raise for teachers that the board had approved contingent on passage was off the table.

On the 2026 side: all three candidates running for Places 1, 2, and 3 on the Argyle ISD Board of Trustees were unopposed, so those races were called off before they reached the ballot. No Argyle ISD VATRE has been confirmed for the Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026 general election ballot in available district or Denton County records.
