The CAC Is Getting a Makeover — And the Town Wants Your Opinion Before It Finalizes the Plans

If you've ever circled the CAC parking lot twice, waited for a lane in the indoor pool, or watched your kid bounce off the walls of a too-small tot drop room, this one is for you. The town is redesigning the Community Activity Center on Gerault Road — not someday, not maybe. It's happening. And the moment to tell them what you actually need is right now.

The town held a public open house at the CAC on Wednesday, June 10, from 6–8 p.m. to walk residents through the renovation plans and collect feedback before designs get locked in. If you missed it, don't assume the conversation is over — the project is still early in a 14-to-16-month design phase, which means detailed construction documents haven't been drawn yet. There's still room to move things.

Nearly $50 million in improvements to the CAC were approved by voters in May 2025 as part of the town's Bond 2025 program. That's real money, already committed. Early plans include renovating the lobby and locker rooms, along with the addition of a year-round indoor leisure pool, expanded fitness area, new basketball/multisport courts, concession area, indoor playground, and a larger tot drop area. The footprint grows considerably too: the expansion will add 55,000 square feet to the currently 60,400-square-foot facility, with an additional 34,000 square feet of the existing building being renovated. More parking is also expected to be added adjacent to the current lot.

That's essentially a new building bolted onto the one you already use.

The design phase is expected to last 14–16 months, giving the town time to refine and develop detailed construction documents. Construction is expected to start in late 2027 and be completed at the end of 2029. So no, this isn't imminent disruption to your Tuesday morning lap swim. But the decisions about what gets built — what gets prioritized, what gets cut — are being made in this window. Once those construction documents exist, reversing course is expensive and slow.

"As the Town enters the design phase for the upcoming Community Activity Center renovation and expansion, staff wants to gather more detailed resident feedback on the look and function of the facility's upgrades," said the town in a post to social media. That's the polished version. The plain version: town staff knows what the feasibility study said residents want in the abstract, but they need specifics now that real dollars are attached.

Think about what actually doesn't work at the CAC today. The parking that runs out on a Saturday. The locker rooms. Whether the new indoor leisure pool should be separate from lap lanes. Whether the tot drop expansion actually solves the drop-off bottleneck or just makes a slightly bigger version of the same problem. That's the kind of feedback that changes a blueprint. Generic "looks great" comments do not.

The CAC was originally built in 2008 on the north end of the Gerault Park property. It's a well-used building — the facility offers a wide range of activities for youth and adult programming, including sports leagues, fitness classes, and educational programs, with a fully equipped fitness floor and weight room, year-round indoor pool, and seasonal outdoor water park. Seventeen years of wear and an evolving town population have outrun the original design. This renovation is the answer to that, if it's designed well.
