The Davis Diamondbacks Are Official — and the Boundary Maps Are Already Out

FloMoBee covered the mascot vote and the boundary-map trigger on September 28, so here's the full picture now that both pieces have landed.

The fun part first. When students voted on the mascot for Davis High School, the Diamondbacks won by a wide margin. Northwest ISD announced the name at the conclusion of a design process that started with a vote from more than 1,000 middle schoolers back in May. The two choices were Aviators or Diamondbacks. It wasn't close.

The Diamondbacks name pairs with the previously announced school colors — maroon, black, and white — to complete the Davis High School branding. Principal Dr. Ron Myers said the mascot "commands respect, is uniquely Texan and makes its presence known when approached," and that "the clear choice from our students shows the unified voice and identity they want to build together."

The district chose the school name after taking community nominations, with the Davis family present at the ceremony. Mr. Davis's daughter, Dr. Anne Simpson, told those gathered that the family is eager to see what traditions the Davis Diamondbacks will establish in the years ahead.

Now the part that actually changes your planning calendar.

A rezoning process is running this semester to draw attendance boundaries for Davis High School and balance enrollment across the district. Proposed high school attendance zone maps have been released to the public, with community input opportunities before anything is finalized.

Those maps are a proposal, not a done deal. Exact boundaries will be set during a rezoning process next winter, after the board hears from residents.

Why does this reach into Flower Mound? Davis High School sits inside the current Byron Nelson High School attendance zone, and the new school will also ease crowding at Eaton and Byron Nelson. The rezoning touches all four NISD high schools, not just the new one.

Davis High School opens in August 2027 and will draw students from Tidwell and Worthington middle schools, with final boundaries set that following winter. The school launches with freshmen and sophomores, adds a junior class in 2028-2029, and brings in a senior class in 2029-2030. Capacity is set at up to 3,200 students at the 6A level for UIL competition, though the school will likely start in 5A before moving up in classification.

If you have a middle or high schooler in Northwest ISD — especially in the Byron Nelson zone — pull up the proposed maps at nisdtx.org/rezoning and check where your address falls. The final boundary vote happens this winter. The input window between now and then is the only chance to weigh in before the lines are drawn.
