The One Fix at FM 407 and I-35W Still Has Months to Go — and It's All You're Getting for a While

If you drive FM 407 west toward I-35W on any weekday morning, you already know the intersection. You've sat in it. You've watched the light cycle twice without moving. Good news: orange cones are out there right now, which means something is actually happening. The FM 407 at I-35W Micro Breakout project has been under construction since February, and the county's most current estimate puts completion somewhere between now and December 2026.

That window — as early as July, as late as December — is the honest state of play. The Cross Timbers Gazette reported that range in mid-June, citing county officials. Construction kicked off in February with a 100-day clock on it. The calendar math should have had it done by late spring. It didn't work out that way. Take the optimistic end with appropriate skepticism.

What the project actually does: Denton County is adding right-turn lanes on the west side of the intersection — a southbound right-turn from I-35W onto westbound FM 407, and a northbound right-turn onto eastbound FM 407 — along with vehicle deflection walls under the I-35W overpass, drainage improvements, and updated pavement markings. It adds no through-lanes. It does not fix the corridor. It is, in the words of Denton County transportation consultant John Polster, "the interim of the interim" — a breakout of the breakout of the ultimate project. The county funded it entirely at a contract price of $2,058,939, awarded to Ed Bell Construction.

Why does it need a name like that? Because the actual fix — widening FM 407 from two lanes to six from Gateway Drive to Cleveland-Gibbs Road — keeps getting delayed. TxDOT operates under a level-letting cap that limits how much the agency can commit to construction in a given year. FM 407 hit that wall. The full breakout project at I-35W got pushed to 2027. The county's response was to fund this smaller, faster intervention themselves and build it on TxDOT's right-of-way. Denton County pulled that off in part because County Engineer Tina Massey is a former TxDOT veteran, and TxDOT trusted the county to build on their network.

The gap between the micro project finishing and anything resembling real relief is the part that stings. The larger FM 407 breakout — six lanes from Gateway Drive to Cleveland-Gibbs Road — is expected to go to bid in March 2027, per the Cross Timbers Gazette. That's bidding, not breaking ground. Actual construction follows after that, timeline still to be determined. You're looking at the better part of another year past December before anything fundamentally changes at this choke point.

The traffic data tells you why Argyle, Flower Mound, and Lantana commuters are fed up. West of the FM 407 and I-35W intersection, average daily trips grew from 14,326 in 2019 to 21,051 in 2024. Nearly 47 percent more vehicles on the same two-lane road in five years. Argyle's town council moved in June to propose a moratorium on new developments on the town's west side specifically because the road can't carry what's already there — and wants the micro breakout finished and the full breakout project started before new permits flow again.

Meanwhile, TxDOT's broader plan to widen 11.5 miles of FM 407 from Justin to Argyle to six lanes is a separate, longer-horizon project that TxDOT's own public information officer described as currently unfunded. Argyle has also complicated that picture by asking TxDOT to reduce the widening through town to four lanes instead of six, citing the impact on the town's tree canopy and character. All of that is speculation territory for anyone counting on a specific construction date.

The micro breakout is triage. It buys some breathing room at the worst single point on this corridor. Whether that breathing room lasts or gets swallowed by continued growth before the March 2027 bid even happens is the real question. Watch that date. And watch whether the current project actually hits December.
