The Person Who'll Control Flower Mound's Roads and Growth for Four Years Is on the November Ballot

If you live in Flower Mound, the person who will manage your county road budget, weigh in on development permits, and vote on the county budget that funds everything from water to emergency services is being decided this year. The race is now set.

David Wylie of Argyle won the Republican primary runoff on May 26, narrowly edging Valerie Roehrs of Bartonville in one of the closest local races in recent memory. Wylie won the GOP nomination with 50.09% of 17,775 votes cast. That's not a mandate. That's a photo finish.

The runoff was triggered because the Republican race for Denton County Commissioners Court, Precinct 4 advanced to a May runoff after no candidate received at least 50% of the vote in the March 3 primary. Four candidates competed in March. Wylie led with 36.9% of the vote, while Roehrs finished second with 23.2%, narrowly edging former Denton Mayor Gerard Hudspeth. Two-term incumbent Dianne Edmondson placed fourth with 17.6%. She's out. New direction, one way or another.

The winner of the Republican runoff will face Democrat Stephanie Draper, who ran unopposed for her party's nomination. The winner of that race will be sworn in for a four-year term in January 2027.

So why should a Flower Mound homeowner care about a commissioner's race? Because Precinct 4 covers this corner of the county. The commissioner who holds this seat votes on the county budget, road projects, and spending priorities that affect the FM 1171 corridor, Cross Timbers, and the western communities where growth is still very much live. This is not a ceremonial role. It's hands-on governance — the kind where one person's attentiveness, or lack of it, shows up in your commute and your tax bill.

Wylie has experience as a State Republican Executive Committee member, while Roehrs is a business owner and rancher. What Wylie does with the nomination between now and November — how he runs, what he prioritizes, whether he engages with the specific concerns of Flower Mound, Argyle, and Bartonville residents — is worth watching closely. A candidate who wins a 50.09% primary is not cruising into a general.

A note on today: the Denton County Elections office is running a joint runoff election today, June 13. Denton city voters can cast ballots today in two runoff races for mayor and City Council At-Large, Place 5. Those are Denton city races, not Flower Mound's. If you're in Flower Mound proper, today's election likely doesn't include your precinct — but November 3 absolutely will.

On election day, voters must go to the polling place assigned to their precinct. Use the voter lookup at votedenton.gov to confirm your location. The general election is November 3. That's when Precinct 4's next four years actually get decided.
