The Town Is Hosting a Free Tree Health Talk

If you spent any part of this summer watching an oak drop leaves early or a cedar elm look suspiciously crispy, you're not alone — and the Town has something for you.

Flower Mound's Environmental Services department is hosting a speaker series focused on tree health. It's free. Registration is open through the town's library events page at flowermound.gov/libraryevents.

The timing tracks. Established trees don't usually need extra watering under normal rainfall, but they do during hard droughts — and this summer qualified. Fall is also when the stress damage shows up: root problems, pest pressure, browning you assumed was heat that turns out to be something worse.

Environmental Services has been building this program for a while. The department's Environmental Programs are designed to get residents thinking about shared natural resources, and the offerings include a speaker series, native plant and tree giveaways, and more. The low bar to entry is the point. You don't have to hire an arborist to find out whether that stressed live oak needs real intervention or just some mulch and patience. Mulch over a tree's critical root zone helps retain moisture, lowers soil temperature around the roots, improves soil conditions, and cuts down on erosion — the kind of specifics this talk is built around.

One more thing worth knowing: the town is currently accepting nominations for its 2026 Tree Recognition Program. The program is meant to raise awareness about tree care and health, and to recognize residents who own and tend notable trees in Flower Mound.
