Your County Just Gave a Taiwanese Tech Giant Eight Years of Tax Breaks — Here's What It's Betting On

If you've driven the Alliance corridor lately — past the warehouses stacking up near Heritage Parkway and Mobility Way — you've already seen the bones of this story. Denton County Commissioners approved a tax abatement agreement last year for Wistron InfoComm, a Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer, to build two facilities in southern Denton County. The deal is now in motion. The sites are purchased. The construction permits are filed.

Here's what the county actually agreed to. Wistron will receive a 40% abatement capped at $3 million for the Heritage Parkway site and a 30% abatement capped at $900,000 for the Mobility Way site, each running eight years. If both sites get built out, the abatement rates climb to 50% and 40% respectively, with a combined cap of $5 million over the eight-year term. That's the county's max exposure: $5 million in forgone property tax revenue spread across eight years, in exchange for what officials say comes back as a permanent employer and a broader tax base once the abatement expires.

What does Wistron actually make? It's a key global supplier for components used in iPhones, notebooks, servers, storage devices, and professional displays. More specifically for this project: the plants will manufacture components for Nvidia's AI supercomputers. This isn't light assembly work. These are facilities built around high-spec manufacturing. One of them includes a 160,000-square-foot ISO-8 cleanroom.

The jobs picture: 888 full-time positions total, split between 634 at 15200 Heritage Parkway and 254 at 14601 Mobility Way, with an average base salary of $63,000. Precinct 3 Commissioner Bobbie J. Mitchell put it plainly: "I am thrilled to have even more jobs on the horizon with starting wages beginning at $63,000, which enable our residents to live, work, and play in Denton County."

Worth noting: this is Wistron's first U.S. manufacturing site. The company chose Denton County over El Paso and Fremont, California. Fort Worth also approved its own abatement package — theirs runs ten years and goes deeper on the percentage — so the incentive stack is layered across city and county.

Now the honest question. Tax abatements are a confidence bet, not a guarantee. The county forgoes real revenue during the abatement window on the assumption the company stays, grows, and pays full taxes once the deal expires. Both facilities need to be completed and fully operational by the end of 2026 for the abatement to take effect — and Wistron must deliver the 888 jobs at the $63,000 average salary as a condition of the agreement. Those aren't soft targets. If either condition slips, the abatement doesn't kick in. That's the county's leverage.

School districts that rely on property tax revenue will feel the abatement period more directly than the county's general fund. No public record shows school leadership weighing in on this specific agreement. Worth watching.

Three things to follow from here: whether both sites hit the end-of-2026 operational deadline; when Wistron posts job openings, since the $63,000 floor matters to Flower Mound residents who'd rather not commute to Dallas; and whether the AI supercomputing demand driving this deal — Nvidia's ambitions, specifically — holds steady long enough for these plants to outlast the abatement. If it does, the county will look very smart. If it doesn't, $5 million in forgiven taxes will be a number people remember for a while.
