Fire Station 6 Breaks Ground in Canyon Falls — West Flower Mound Gets a Real Coverage Upgrade

If you live west of FM 2499 — in Canyon Falls, near Furst Ranch, or anywhere in that stretch of town that's been filling in fast — your fire coverage just got a lot more real. Flower Mound broke ground last Friday on Fire Station 6's permanent home at the corner of Canyon Falls Drive and Denton Creek Boulevard. The temp setup on Stonecrest Road has been doing the job. But a public works building was never the right answer for a neighborhood this size.

The new dedicated fire station has a budget of $20 million and will be built on 6.64 acres owned by the town at 6801 Canyon Falls Drive. That's a serious commitment. Station 6 is expected to open fall 2027 and service much of Flower Mound's fast-growing west side — including the large Furst Ranch development, the Monarch development, and the Denton Creek District, which will eventually connect the community to I-35W. Three major growth areas. One station. You can see why they needed to move.

The coverage gap has been hiding in plain sight for years. When the temporary Station 6 opened on Stonecrest Road in 2017, the town's population was 71,850 — it's now well past that — and the location was always meant to be a stopgap while the town searched for land adequate for a permanent facility. That search is over. A Geographic Information System was used to determine drive times, and it pointed fire officials to build in a central location in the Canyon Falls community. They picked the spot based on where a truck needs to be, not where land was cheap.

"As we grow, this will accommodate that and will be a shining star for the Town of Flower Mound on that side to give them some facilities that are much-deserved," said Fire Chief Paul Henley. That's not boosterism. That's a fire chief who's been managing a coverage area that outgrew its footprint. According to the town's own presentation to council, the demand for service, personnel, and equipment created the need to construct a permanent facility out west.

The building itself is worth noting. The 21,444-square-foot facility will include workspace for police officers, community gathering spaces, meeting rooms, and study pods for students. There will also be a trailhead that starts at the station and will eventually connect to a greater trail system. A fire station that doubles as a neighborhood anchor — which makes sense when you're essentially building the civic infrastructure for a part of town that's still coming in.

Now the honest caveat: fall 2027 is the target, not a guarantee. Groundbreaking and opening are different things. Watch that timeline. And watch the staffing conversation that has to follow — four to six people per shift will work out of the new Station 6, which means crew assignments the town will need to fund on an ongoing basis. The building is the visible investment. The payroll is the permanent one.
