Lakeside Parkway Is About to Go Out to Bid — With $9.5 Million from the County

If you drive Lakeside Parkway between Long Prairie Road and the town's eastern edge, you already know it doesn't work. Too much truck traffic, not enough lanes, signals that can't keep up. Flower Mound's own engineers said so: the road hasn't met the town's standard for a major arterial in years. That's about to change — and the bill is mostly someone else's.

The widening project — four lanes to six, running from FM 2499 to the town's eastern border — goes out for contractor bids this month. Design is roughly 90% complete, meaning the hard work of lining up right-of-way, relocating utilities, and coordinating with adjacent cities is done. This is no longer a plan. It's a procurement.

The money side is worth noticing. Total project cost: $14.2 million. Denton County, through its voter-approved TRIP-22 transportation bond, is contributing $9,488,000 of that — locked in through a county interlocal agreement on February 3, 2026. Flower Mound covers the remainder through roadway impact fees and bond funds. Denton County Precinct 3 Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell put it plainly: "These voter-approved funds allow us to work with our towns and cities on road projects that are important within their communities for better transportation access." Without that county money, Flower Mound officials acknowledged, other projects would face delays.

The scope goes beyond adding lanes. Two new traffic signals are coming — one at Silveron Boulevard, one at Enterprise Drive — specifically to manage the surge in truck traffic and the development pressure stacking up along that corridor. Assistant Director of Public Works Matthew Hotelling confirmed the additional signals are tied to both current truck volume and what's still coming.

There's also a piece that crosses town lines. Flower Mound is working with the City of Grapevine on an easement that would allow three eastbound lanes and two westbound lanes on Lakeside Parkway between the town limits and SH 121, extending the capacity gain beyond Flower Mound's borders. That negotiation is still active. Not finished.

Construction on the widening is set to begin in late summer. That's when you'll feel it. Lane closures, shifted traffic, the slow grind that comes before the payoff. It will hurt before it helps — that's just what widening a live arterial looks like. But when it's done, a road that couldn't handle what the town already built around it will finally match the load.

Watch for the contractor selection. Competitive bids in this environment will tell you whether the $14.2 million estimate holds, or whether costs have crept the way they tend to on projects that have been in design since June 2023.
