Mio Nonno Is Coming to Highland Village
The Lakeside favorite just claimed the old Rockfish Grill space at The Shops at Highland Village — here's what that means for your dinner plans.
If you've ever grumbled about driving to Lakeside just to get a table at Mio Nonno, your commute just got shorter.
Mio Nonno Trattoria is opening a new location at 4061 Barton Creek, Suite 110, at The Shops at Highland Village — the same building as Ben & Jerry's, in a space that was previously home to Rockfish Grill. No opening date has been announced yet, so don't cancel your Lakeside reservation just yet.
Mio Nonno has been a staple in southern Denton County since it opened in Flower Mound in 2017, earning the kind of loyal crowd that keeps a wait list going on Saturday nights. The Highland Village location will serve the same authentic central and southern Italian menu: wood-fired pizza, handmade pasta, and fresh salads. If you were worried they'd water it down for a new market, the menu signal says no.
The menu was crafted by Chef Ati Mala with his childhood best friend, Noti Krasniqi, and before opening in Texas, the two co-owned a Mediterranean restaurant called Andrra in the Hamptons. That pedigree has always been part of the story at Lakeside. Whether it travels well to a busy suburban shopping center is the question every second-location expansion has to answer.
The Highland Village spot will add to Mio Nonno's regional chain, which already includes the Lakeside DFW location in Flower Mound and another in Allen. That's not a mom-and-pop testing the waters anymore. This is a brand that has learned how to replicate itself.
The upside for Flower Mound regulars is real: a second kitchen pulling demand could ease the crush at Lakeside on weekend evenings. The risk, as with any split operation, is that quality and attention get spread thin before the new crew finds its footing. Rockfish Grill held that space and didn't survive it — though the reasons had nothing to do with the neighborhood.
Watch for a soft-opening announcement. When it comes, give it a few weeks before you show up expecting the full Lakeside experience. The wood-fired oven takes time to season. So does a room.
