Texas Lost Its Chief Election Official. Denton County Still Has to Run November.

Here's the part that matters to you: Denton County is holding its general election on November 3, 2026, and the last day to register to vote is October 5. Between now and then, county election staff have a lot of mechanical work to do — recruit poll workers, secure polling locations, process voter registration applications. They do that work, in part, by leaning on state guidance when a procedural question doesn't have an obvious answer.

That guidance just got a lot harder to reach.

Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson announced she will resign effective July 17, capping off three and a half years as the state's top election official. The press release did not say why Nelson is resigning from her role. By law, Gov. Greg Abbott is required to nominate someone to fill the vacant position "without delay" — but it's unclear how quickly Abbott will move to fill Nelson's role or whom he is considering for the job.

That gap is not ceremonial. Although the secretary of state's office has no law enforcement authority and can't change the law, it can issue election law opinions on how to implement election and voting rules. When Denton County's election administrators hit an edge case — a question about ballot language, a voter registration puzzle — Austin is where they look. Nelson's departure will happen just as election officials across the state are preparing in earnest for the November general election; in the summer months, they'll be recruiting election workers, seeking polling locations, and processing voter registration applications.

Election officials are worried about what the sudden transition of leadership at the Texas Secretary of State's office could mean as they prepare for the November 2026 midterm election. Some voting rights advocates say a new appointee may want to direct local election officials to change election procedures, which could lead to chaos and confusion for voters. The real risk isn't one catastrophic meltdown. It's dozens of small judgment calls, made without state input, that quietly add up.

This lands especially close to home because Precinct 4 covers the southwest portion of Denton County — from Argyle to Northlake, Ponder, Justin, and Flower Mound. That seat is on the November ballot, and it's genuinely competitive. David Wylie will face Democrat Stephanie Draper, who ran uncontested to win her party's nomination. Draper is a small business owner. Wylie won the Republican runoff by just 31 votes — which tells you the Republican primary electorate itself was almost evenly split. November will be closer than the county's used to.

The winner of the Precinct 4 race will be sworn in for a four-year term in January 2027 — meaning whoever sits in that seat will be shaping growth decisions across southwest Denton County for the back half of this decade. Roads. Infrastructure. Development pressure that lands on your commute and your property tax bill.

Abbott has appointed six secretaries of state since entering office in 2015, only three of whom were confirmed by the state Senate. A long-term replacement needs Senate confirmation — which means an interim appointee could be running Texas elections through November without full legislative sign-off. Not unprecedented. Not ideal timing either.

Watch for two things: whether Denton County's elections office issues any of its own procedural guidance before October, and whether Abbott names a replacement before July 17. If the seat sits vacant even briefly during peak summer prep season, county staff will be making more decisions on their own than they should have to.
