The FM 2499/FM 3040 Intersection Just Got Worse Before It Gets Better

A $2.82 million rebuild starts now and runs through July 2027 — here's what changes about your commute starting this week.

If you drive through the intersection of FM 2499 and FM 3040 on your way to work, the grocery store, or anywhere north of Cross Timbers, you already know. It backs up. It always backs up. The town has finally started doing something about it — and for the next thirteen-plus months, it's going to get messier before it gets better.

Flower Mound Town Council unanimously approved a contract worth over $2.82 million with Boyd-based 2L Construction back on March 2. A notice for 2L Construction to start work could be issued in May, with a projected completion in July 2027 — meaning if that timeline held, crews are active or nearly active right now.

The redesign is thorough. Each direction of travel will have dual left-turn lanes, three through lanes, and a dedicated right-turn lane. That's a real upgrade from what's there today. Crews will also add a dedicated right-turn lane into a nearby Chick-fil-A to alleviate congestion. Dale Crown, Flower Mound's assistant director of engineering, explained why that matters: "In the past, we've had traffic for the drive-thru back up into the main lanes," Crown said. "This, in combination with the improvements they've made with circulation within the Chick-fil-A site, will go a long way."

Anyone who has sat in that left-turn lane watching Chick-fil-A cars block through traffic knows exactly what he's talking about.

Crews are expected to have restricted lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. during construction. That window protects rush-hour drivers. It still means midday runs — school pickups, lunch errands, afternoon appointments — will hit delays. Plan for it.

The money isn't all coming from town coffers. Denton County Commissioners Court approved an interlocal cooperative agreement with the town on February 3, 2026, to contribute funds to the project for an amount not to exceed $3,500,000. Denton County putting real dollars in signals that county leaders recognize this corridor is carrying regional load, not just neighborhood traffic.

The stakes are straightforward. FM 2499 is one of Flower Mound's primary north-south spines, and FM 3040 funnels traffic east toward Lewisville and west toward Grapevine Road. This intersection doesn't just serve the neighborhoods around it — it's a pressure valve for the whole southern half of town. If 2L Construction hits the July 2027 finish line, the payoff is an intersection built for where Flower Mound's growth is headed, not where it was ten years ago. If the project slips or scopes up, commuters will feel it across every alternate route they try.

Watch for any official notice that construction has formally started — that's the real clock. If you drive this stretch daily, map your backup route now, before you need it.
